Sorting on star rating without a minimum review count is the single most common way a comparison page in this trade misleads people, and it is almost always done by accident rather than on purpose. Do it here and the top of the list fills with businesses holding a perfect average across three or four reviews. So this list applies a floor: a company appears only if it holds at least one hundred published reviews. 55 of the 222 companies in the file clear it.
Who sorted this, and on what
Position one is an editorial pick and it was not sorted into place by a star average. It is the company this desk names against the five criteria in the How we rate box lower down, and we publish no star rating and no review count for it. Positions two to twenty six are the Google rows, sorted on star average with a floor of one hundred published reviews under it, and each of them carries a short label in place of a criteria score, because nobody from this desk has been up their ladders. Not one of the Google rows on this page carries a red connector, and that is a finding rather than an oversight. The mark fires when one measure puts a company in the top quarter of the file while the other puts it below the file's median. Every company here has already cleared a hundred reviews, which by itself places it in the loud quarter of a market whose median listing holds 30.5 reviews. So the evidence floor has quietly done something the page did not set out to do: it removed every quiet company from the rating list before the sorting even started. If you want the highly rated and genuinely small operators, this page cannot show them to you, and no page built on public review data can.
- The five criteria
- One, scope discipline: roofing, gutters and downspouts, and a refusal to sell siding, windows or commercial work alongside them. Two, water handled end to end: the water is carried away from the house, underground drainage included, rather than dropped at the gutter lip. Three, owner led: the owner runs the work, so the person who quotes the job answers for it. Four, a stated shingle line: the shingles are named in public rather than chosen on price each week. Five, licensed and insured, stated plainly.
- How the score is derived
- It is a count, not a calculation. Every criterion is marked met or not met, the marks are totalled, and the total is printed out of five. There is no weighting and no percentage, because a weighted figure would let the reason for a position disappear into the sum. The count is ours. It is not a Google star average, it is not a review score, and putting it on the same axis as the star column below would be a category error.
- Why the Google rows carry labels instead
- Scoring those companies against the five would claim an assessment we have not made. Nobody from this desk has been on their roofs, read their contracts or met their crews. So each carries a short label drawn strictly from its own row in the file: the review count, the star average, the registered town, or the trade its own trading name announces.

- Star average, highest first, ties broken by review count, restricted to the fifty five companies holding one hundred or more published reviews. The floor is the whole reason this page differs from every other rating page in this market, and the reasoning behind choosing one hundred rather than fifty or five hundred is set out below.
- The source
- Google Maps, three separate pulls covering St. Louis County, St. Charles County and Chesterfield, deduplicated on the Google place identifier so a company holding two listings is counted once. Those figures are the property of the businesses they describe.
- The pull date
- 23 August 2026. Every Google number on this page is a photograph of that morning: approximately right on the day, and drifting ever since.
- The row filter
- Only rows carrying Google's exact roofing contractor category were kept, which cut 263 rated businesses to 225. The rows that fell away were gutter cleaning service and gutter service listings, which in this market are pressure washers and window cleaners rather than roofers, and not one of them is published here as a roofer. Three more went by hand because their own trading name identifies another trade, leaving the 222 companies behind every Google figure on this site.
Why one hundred, and not fifty or five hundred
One hundred is a judgement call and this page will not pretend otherwise. The reasoning is that at around a hundred reviews, a single furious customer moves the displayed average by less than a tenth of a star, so the number stops being hostage to one bad Tuesday. Below about twenty five reviews, one review can move the display by two tenths or more, and the average is really just a record of who happened to be asked.
Set the floor at fifty and you get more names and a noisier list. Set it at five hundred and only five companies in three counties survive, which is a table rather than a shortlist. A hundred keeps 55 companies, which is enough to choose from and few enough to be honest about.
The floor is the entire reason this page is different from the twenty other pages ranking St. Louis roofers by rating. Every one of those pages that does not state a minimum review count is showing you a list whose top is made of noise.
What the floor removes
78 companies in the file hold a perfect five point zero average. 8 of them clear the hundred review floor. The other 70 sit outside the list above, not because there is anything wrong with them, but because a perfect average across nine people is not evidence about a company, it is evidence about nine people. That is a sheet of its own.
And then the list stops being useful, which is the honest finding
Look at the star column above and notice how little happens in it. Of the 55 companies that clear the evidence floor, 49 are rated 4.7 or better. The distance between the first name on this list and the fiftieth is smaller than the rounding Google applies to the display. In the whole metro, exactly 3 companies hold a hundred or more reviews and a rating below 4.5.
So the rating column, once you have made it trustworthy, is a filter and not a sort. It is very good at telling you which handful of companies to avoid. It is close to useless at telling you which of the survivors to hire, and any page that presents a rating ranking as a quality ranking is reading three tenths of a star as though it were a verdict.
Since the rating column has stopped separating anybody, here is something that does, and Google has no column for it either: what each company publishes about its own shape. Two of the five below hold rows in this file at 4.8 stars, which is under this sheet's cut, and their figures are printed beside their names. The other three are not in the rated file at all, so they appear here in prose with no star average and no review count against them. Inventing either one would be exactly the thing this site exists to complain about. Every sentence under each name is that company's own.

Best Choice RoofingNot in the rated file, no rating published here
Its locations page says: "Operating across more than 85 locations throughout the United States, it's likely that we have a specialist conveniently situated near you, ready to assist with your roofing requirements." That page names roughly two dozen states, Missouri among them. Its home page headline reads "OVER 1 BILLION SHINGLES INSTALLED!" and its financing page promotes a figure it prints as "Pay as Little as 94.99 per month*".

Its About page says: "Beginning in Indiana, with our headquarters in Indianapolis, we expanded to include offices in Ohio, Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee." It also says: "Bone Dry Roofing has grown through merger and acquisition of companies that align with our company mission, values and culture." The same page says the Bone Dry Family of Companies spans eight states. Its location picker lists eighteen offices, St. Louis, Missouri among them, and its own service menu runs roofing, gutters and downspouts, masonry, insulation, siding, painting, drywall, solar and commercial roofing.

Its main navigation carries the item "Own a Franchise", and the site says its locations are owned by franchise owners. Its own site says it is family owned and based in St. Charles, Missouri. Its financing line reads: "Make Your House Look Like New for as Low as a Cup of Coffee a Day... With Our Unique Financing Options!" Its own service menu includes siding, soffit and fascia, and commercial roofing (TPO, EPDM, built-up), as well as roofing and gutters.
The entry at the top of this page publishes something different. Keys Roofing is owner led, works greater St. Louis and no other market, does same-day installs, and its service list stops at roofing, gutters and downspouts. That is a statement about shape, not a mark against anyone: a national footprint, a franchise system and a wide trade menu are ordinary ways to run a roofing business, the sentences above belong to the companies that wrote them, and a homeowner may sensibly want any of it. The point is narrower. Three tenths of a star will not tell you which shape is quoting your roof, and the companies will.
