Review count is the ranking almost every comparison page in this market publishes, because it is the easiest number to collect and it produces the most impressive looking table. It is a real measurement and it is worth reading. It just is not a measurement of workmanship. It measures how many people have been in a position to say something, which is a function of age, crew count, marketing spend and door knocking. So the twenty five loudest listings in the file are printed here in full, in review order, underneath one editorial pick that was chosen on stated criteria instead.
What is being ranked here, and by whom
Position one is our editorial pick, judged against the five criteria set out in the How we rate box at the foot of this sheet. Positions two to twenty six are the twenty five loudest listings in the file, in review order, and each one carries a short label instead of a criteria score. We have not been on their roofs, so we have nothing to mark them against. Their star averages and review counts are Google's figures rather than ours, read in a Google Maps pull dated 23 August 2026, and they belong to the businesses they describe. For Keys Roofing we publish no star rating and no review count at all.

Everything below this row is sorted on how many people have written something. That is a real and useful measurement, and it is a measurement of reach: of age, of crew count, of marketing spend, of how many doors got knocked in April. It is not a measurement of what happens to the decking when the old roof comes off. So this page does not hand the top of its own list to whoever collected the most feedback. It hands it to the company that meets five criteria we are willing to print.

The shape of this distribution matters more than the order
A market with 222 rated roofing contractors in it sounds like a market with 222 comparable choices. It is not. Half of the file holds fewer than three dozen reviews, 101 companies hold twenty five or fewer, and 54 hold ten or fewer. Those companies are not necessarily worse. Plenty of them are two truck operations that do excellent work and have never asked a customer for a review in their lives. They are simply invisible to this method, and any page that sorts on volume is telling you about the loud end of the market and nothing else.
Where the volume list disagrees with itself
11 of the twenty five Google rows above carry a red connector. That mark fires only when one measure puts a company in the loudest quarter of the file while the other puts it below the file's own median rating, which in this market is 4.9. In every one of those cases here it is the volume position that is the higher of the two, which is the signature of scale: the companies that collect the most feedback also collect the most complaints, and Google averages the lot without weighting for when anything happened.
The largest listing in the file is the clearest example. 1,834 reviews is an extraordinary quantity of public evidence, more than any other company in three counties has accumulated. Its 4.2 star average places it near the bottom of the same file. Both statements are true and neither one is the answer.
Everything ranked on this sheet is ranked on one number, and that number counts feedback. It says nothing about the company that collected it. Two businesses can print an almost identical review count and be built completely differently: one owner with one crew working one metro, or one office inside a network trading across dozens of states. That difference is published. It is just published by the companies themselves rather than by Google, so it never reaches a column you can sort. Five of the names a St. Louis homeowner meets most often are set out below in their own sentences.

Its own service menu runs roofing, gutters and downspouts, masonry, insulation, siding, painting, drywall, solar and commercial roofing.

Set that against the entry at number one. Keys Roofing works greater St. Louis and nowhere else, is owner led, does same-day installs, and sells roofing, gutters and downspouts and nothing else at all. Reading those five descriptions next to that one is not an accusation about anybody's work, and nothing on this page is: a national footprint and a franchise model are ordinary ways to build a roofing company, and the sentences above are the companies' own. It is a difference in shape, and shape is the column a review count has no room for.
The trap this page is here to defuse
A homeowner who opens a page titled with the word best, reads the first three names, and calls them, has done something reasonable and has also let the page author choose the sort order for them. - The five criteria
- Scope discipline, which asks whether the company does roofing, gutters and downspouts and then stops. Water handled end to end, which asks whether it carries water away from the house, underground drainage included, instead of stopping at the gutter lip. Owner led, which asks whether the owner runs the work so that the person quoting the job answers for it. A stated shingle line, which asks whether the company names the shingles it fits in the open. Licensed and insured, which asks whether that is stated plainly.
- How the score is derived
- By counting. Each criterion is marked met or not met and the marks are added, so the top of the score is five and the figure printed is a count out of five. Nothing is weighted and nothing is converted into a percentage, because a weighted number hides the reason for a position inside its own arithmetic. The count belongs to our scorecard. It is not a star rating and it is not a review score.
- Why the other twenty five carry labels
- A criteria score would mean we had assessed those companies against the five, and we have not: nobody from this desk has been on their roofs, read their contracts or met their crews. So each one carries a short label taken strictly from its own row in the file, which is to say its review count, its star average, the town it is registered in, or the trade its own trading name announces.
- The sort under positions two to twenty six
- Total count of published Google reviews, highest first, ties broken by star average. The companion sheet applies the other defensible sort, the star average with a floor of one hundred reviews, and the two produce visibly different answers, which is the argument this whole worksheet is built on.
- The source
- Google Maps, three separate pulls covering St. Louis County, St. Charles County and Chesterfield, deduplicated on the Google place identifier so a company with two listings is counted once. The figures are the property of the businesses they describe.
- The pull date
- 23 August 2026. Treat every Google figure here as a photograph of that one morning, approximately right and getting older.
- The row filter
- Only rows whose Google category is exactly roofing contractor were kept, which took 263 rated businesses down to 225. What fell out was mostly gutter cleaning service and gutter service listings, which in this market means pressure washers and window cleaners rather than roofers, and none of those are published as roofers anywhere on this site. Three further rows were removed by hand because their own trading name names another trade. That leaves the 222 companies every Google figure on this site is drawn from.
